Photo resolutions, DPI, and format

Our scanning process utilizes a sharp 600 DPI resolution and 24-bit color depth to ensure your digital photos are high-quality and long-lasting.

Digital File Format (.JPG)

After scanning, your digital photos are resized to a maximum of 3000 pixels on the longest side and saved as compressed .JPG files. This format reduces file size without significant loss of visible image quality.

Uncompressed .TIF files are available upon request, but may take several extra days to upload.

File Names

Your scanned photos are named sequentially in the order they were digitized. If we scan the back of a photo, that scan is saved as a separate file with the extension "+back" added to the filename. This keeps the front and back of the same photo files grouped together while remaining distinct files.

In your Cloud Vault Backup and on your USB flash drive, your photos will be listed with filenames like these:

  • Photo_0001.jpg
  • Photo_0001+back.jpg
  • Photo_0002.jpg
  • ...
